Abstract:
Cryogenic treatment is acknowledged as a means of extending the life of cutting inserts in tuning operation but effect of tempering after cryogenic treatment is not reported. The main objective of the this work was to understand the effect of cryogenic treatment and double tempering of coated tungsten carbide inserts in orthogonal turning on the machining performance has been carried out. The commercially available TiAlN Coated Square shaped WC was subjected to cryogenic treatment and double tempering independently. The experimental results indicates the cryogenically and double tempered WC inserts performed significantly better as compared with only cryogenically treated and untreated tools. The scanning electron microscope showed that the untreated profile cutting tool has greater ploughing than that of the doubled tempered profile.
