Abstract:
A Cartesian type of arc welding mini-robot was developed. This paper evaluates the performance of the developed welding mini robot and compared its performance with the manual arc welding and non-welding operations. The developed welding robot has a range of welding time (4.7-32.94s), welding speed starting from 4.41mm/s over same range of mild steel plate thicknesses from 0.5-1.0mm and length of weld while manual arc welding time ranges from 15 to 45s over same range of mild steel plate thicknesses. The higher the thickness of the mild steel plate, the lower the time of weld and the higher the welding speed. This is true in the use of the developed welding robot. The developed robot welding samples when compared with manual arc welded and un-welded samples have the highest hardness. The un-welded (CONTROL) samples gave the highest extension while the developed robot welding samples gave the lowest. The un-welded (CONTROL) samples gave the highest tensile stress while the developed robot welding sample gave the lowest. The tensile strain values of welded and un-welded mild steel plates (specimens) of different sizes show that the un-welded (CONTROL) samples gave the highest values while developed robot welding samples gave the lowest. The developed robot welding samples gave a trend of comparatively lower values of modulus of elasticity than both the un-welded and electric arc welding samples.The un-welded (CONTROL) samples gave the highest break point while the developed robot welding samples gave the lowest. However, the welding speeds of developed welding robot are far greater than those of the electric arc welding. This is an advantage and should be of interest to the Manufacturing Industry in Nigeria in the areas of precision machining, mass production of items, reduction of machining time and cost of production, increased productivity and maximization of profit.
